Venice

Venice's dazzling beauty never ceases to delight even the most frequent visitor. It is always a joy to stroll through the narrow streets linked by small bridges or to take the vaporetti down the Grand Canal and around the islands. With so many fascinating churches, museums and galleries, there is always something new to discover once you have visited the Basilica of St Mark, the Doges' Palace and the other main sights. More off the beaten track, stroll through the silent streets of the Giudecca, take the boat to the extraordinary island of Torcello, and sit at a café in the unassuming square in front of the lovely church of San Zanipolo. A magical, romantic city in any season.
The 3-star Hotel Due Fanali, complete with a rooftop terrace, enjoys a good location on a quiet square in the Santa Croce district. There are just 16 traditionally but simply furnished bedrooms. For a special upgrade, we recommend its elegant sister hotel, the 4-star Ca’Nigra. It is located on the same square, but overlooks the Grand Canal. The interior blends antique and modern, and the 20 rooms are all junior suites. The prices below are for the Due Fanali.

Verona

With its easy-going atmosphere and pretty streets lined with pink-hued medieval buildings, it is hard not to be seduced by Verona's charms. Given the city's rich and colourful history, there is a wealth of sites to discover, not least several superbly preserved Roman monuments – the Arena, Roman theatre, Porta dei Borsari and Pietra Bridge. Other highlights include the fascinating collection of paintings and artefacts housed in the Castelvecchio, the elaborate Gothic tombs of the Scaliger family, and the magnificent Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, one of the most important Romanesque churches in northern Italy, decorated with 12th-century reliefs and frescoes. Though the two rival families at the centre of Shakespeare's famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet did exist – the Montecchi (Montague) family supported the Pope while the Cappello (Capulet) family supported the Emperor – the fable of the two lovers is an old folk tale that had been circulating in northern Italy for centuries. Nevertheless, you can visit Juliet's house (the Casa di Giulietta) on Via Cappello and make a wish while standing underneath the balcony – it is said that all those relating to love will eventually come true.
The 4-star Grand Hotel, one of several hotels we offer, has been converted from an Art Nouveau townhouse to offer 62 air-conditioned rooms. Well-located on the broad Corso Porta Nuova, it is only a few minutes’ walk from the Arena and boasts a patio and summer garden in which to relax in good weather.

Lucca

Sandwiched between the more celebrated cities of Florence and Pisa, Lucca has a charm all of its own. Enclosed by Renaissance ramparts (great for a scenic stroll), in turn bordered by manicured gardens, ancient Lucca is compact and intriguing, a jumble of red-tiled houses, ancient squares and historic churches, and is easy to discover on foot. Highlights are San Michele in Foro, and the cathedral, which houses the famously beautiful tomb of Ilaria del Carretto by Jacopo della Quercia. It is hard to think of a square as delightful as Piazza Anfiteatro, built on the site of the Roman amphitheatre, parts of which can still be seen between the bustling pavement cafés. Sit here with an espresso and imagine the gladiators of old.
Just a few steps from the medieval city gate, Porta San Gervasio, the 4-star Hotel Ilaria offers high standards of comfort and service. The 30 bedrooms, all with air conditioning, are spacious and smartly decorated. In good weather, the extensive buffet breakfast is served on one of the two terraces overlooking the park of the Villa Bottini. Bicycles are available free for guests' use if you fancy doing as the locals do and getting about on two wheels! We also offer the smaller, 3-star Piccolo Hotel Puccini, located in the heart of the old town, which is praised for the friendliness of the staff, who extend a warm and genuine welcome to guests. There are just 14 small but comfortable bedrooms, making for an intimate atmosphere. The prices below are for the Hotel Ilaria.

Florence

Birthplace of the Renaissance, cosmopolitan Florence is perhaps the world's greatest art city. There are so many art treasures to discover that it is best not to cram it all into one weekend – to see the renowned Uffizi's entire collection can take the best part of a day in itself – so we recommend you limit yourself to just a handful of churches and galleries. Spend the rest of your time admiring the white, red and green marble façade of the cathedral, whose huge dome dominates the city's skyline, from a pavement café in Piazza del Duomo, browsing the stalls of the chaotic street market, strolling across the medieval Vecchio Bridge or visiting the jewel-like church of San Miniato which perches on one of the hills above the city.
The centrally situated Guelfo Bianco is classed as a 3-star hotel, but could easily have been a 4-star. It is an attractive, gold-painted 15th-century town house on the historic Via Cavour. Inside, it is exquisitely furnished with antiques and hand-made fabrics, a wonderful blend of old and new, with the walls of the bright, individually decorated bedrooms and public areas hung with original paintings by well-known modern artists.

Rome

Rome is one of those cities you want to visit again and again, discovering new treasures, and enjoying new views of favourite places. The city can often appear to be a wonderful, chaotic stage show, but it is surprisingly easy to find quiet corners along the river or on the Gianicolo hill above St Peter's. After years of closure, the Galleria Borghese has reopened and is quite magnificent. Discover the elegant mansions of Via Giulia, the bustle and atmosphere of the Campo de'Fiori (a great place for an aperitif of prosecco), the magnificence of the Vatican City. Before you leave, don't forget to throw a euro into the Trevi Fountain to ensure your next visit!
In a street off the Via del Corso, one of Rome's main shopping streets and the eastern boundary of the Centro Storico, the 3-star Mozart is within easy walking distance of many great sights, including the Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo and the shaded gardens of the Villa Borghese. The hotel has 56 well-equipped and air-conditioned bedrooms, a sitting room and panoramic roof garden.

Naples

Sometimes chaotic, often noisy and always bursting with energy, Naples, capital of the Mezzogiorno (land of the midday sun) and the birthplace of pizza, is the very essence of Italian brio. The setting is glorious – the sweeping arc of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, the pretty islands of Capri, Ischi and Procida. But the real joy of a break here is to explore the compact centre, packed not just with magnificent monuments like the Renaissance Porta Capuana, the unique Castel Nuovo and dozens of wonderful churches, but brimming with the hustle and bustle of everyday life – little markets, pavement cafés, tempting restaurants. Don't miss the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, which houses a superb collection of mosaics and frescoes from nearby Pompeii.
Converted from an early 20th-century aristocrat's villa, the Miramare is a friendly 4-star hotel located right on the seafront, close to the Castel dell'Ovo. The original Art Nouveau elegance has been retained throughout the hotel, and the 30 bedrooms, all with air conditioning, are well-appointed. The roof terrace is an ideal place to relax and admire the views of the bay. We also offer the 2-star Pension Pinto-Storey, a short walk from the Villa Comunale and close, too, to the funicular station linking to other parts of the city. Some of the 25 well-equipped bedrooms have views of the Bay of Naples (supplement payable). The late 19th-century building also has a small sitting area. The prices below are for the Hotel Miramare.
