Dog-Sledding HolidaysIt is hard to beat the thrill of gliding noiselessly across the snow on a sled pulled by a team of eager huskies, and dog-sledding is a great way to discover Norwegian Lapland's magnificent white wilderness. • friendly, English-speaking guide • full-board • learn the skills to drive your own team • experience the traditional lifestyle of the Sámi culture For anyone passionate about exploring true wilderness regions in the most authentic way possible, our dog-sledding holidays offer a unique experience - and one that guests become eager to repeat. Breathing the pure air of the Arctic Circle, while experiencing the freedom of gliding across the snow behind a team of huskies, creates the holiday of a lifetime. A reasonable level of fitness and a sense of balance are all that’s required to enter fully into this thrilling pursuit based at Engholm Husky Lodge, where you also gain a fascinating insight into Sami culture. Built on the banks of Karasjohka River close to the Finnish boarder, Sven Engholm’s husky lodge comprises a group of cosy log cabins built by Sven himself, each with their own innovatively crafted interior design. Warm hospitality and wholesome cuisine are hallmarks of the lodge itself, with each day starting with an extensive buffet breakfast. There is also a wood-heated sauna within the cosy turf-covered barta (main lodge) where you gather sociably each evening around the open fire to discuss the thrills from your day on the fells. The husky farm has 40-50 highly trained sled dogs which are used for local tours and long-distance racing, and you are introduced to the skills of handling the dogs and the exhilarating pleasure of driving your own team. Your guide could not be better qualified: Sven has led Siberian expeditions, and won Europe’s longest dog-sled race eleven times. Dinner, lunch and breakfast are included on all breaks and we would be happy to book extra nights for you at the lodge at the start or end of your stay. The first day of each holiday sets the tone with a welcoming dinner and introduction. Choose from three options. Base Camp ExperienceThis four-night holiday offers a wonderful taste of life at the lodge, and includes two day trips, when you learn the basics of handling a husky team and sled-driving (although you are free to ride as a passenger, warmly wrapped in reindeer furs, if you prefer). You explore a varied landscape, with lunch around an open fire on the longer of the two day trips. Your fourth day is free to enjoy activities on the farm, or to explore the superb Sámi cultural centre in Karasjok. Breakfast on the fifth day concludes your trip.
Husky TourTo explore a little further afield, this four-night holiday takes in the beautiful tundra landscape around Engholm Lodge. On your first full day, you learn to handle your team and are fully equipped before beginning your trip across rolling fells and past icy lakes to a wilderness cabin where you spend two nights. You then return to the lodge for a warm sauna and farewell dinner.
Dog-Sled AdventureYou have time to enter fully into the husky farm life on this seven-night holiday. You learn to drive a team of dogs during the first two days and then, after a restful day enjoying activities on the farm or visiting the nearby cultural centre, you leave the lodge for an amazing excursion. With the team of dogs you’ve got to know, you set out on a guided three-day tour, crossing varied terrain with lakes and marshes, to spend two nights at a cosy wilderness cabin, exploring the winter pasturing area for reindeer. On the final day you return to Engholm and a farewell dinner.
