Kandersteg is a magical place to experience a varied holiday based in the magnificent scenery of the Bernese Oberland, with some wonderful trails for walking and exploring. Our ever-popular winter walking weeks at the wonderful 3-star Hotel Victoria include one day’s guided walk, one day’s guided snow-shoe excursion, a torchlit stroll followed by mulled wine, a horse-drawn sleigh ride and a fondue evening with musical entertainment. Completely idyllic and tranquil, the Engadine Valley is particularly beautiful when covered in snow, and lends itself to leisurely discovery. Its best-preserved village, Guarda, and the romantic 3-star Hotel Meisser make a fitting base from which to explore. Our arrangements include two guided walks and one snow-shoe excursion led by one of your hosts, Benno or Maya, plus a horse-drawn sleigh ride followed by a fondue. With over 130 kilometres of specially prepared winter walking paths in the valley, you have plenty to discover during the rest of the week, and can explore further afield using the train (rail pass included).

Snow-shoeing weeks

Snow-shoeing is the ideal way to enjoy the magical winter enchantment of exquisite Guarda and its surroundings. Exploring with either Benno or Maya, your hosts at the atmospheric 3-star Hotel Meisser, you will discover hidden corners of the picturesque Engadine Valley that are inaccessible to walkers and cross-country skiers. We include three guided excursions of around four hours each, plus a horse-drawn sleigh ride followed by a fondue. On free days, you can head out by yourselves – we include snow-shoe rental for the whole week, and Benno and Maya will be delighted to advise you on the best areas to explore, where, hopefully, you will spot lots of wildlife. No previous experience of snow-shoeing is required.

With so much going on in and around picture-book Kandersteg, a stay at the 3-star Hotel Victoria is always varied. To make your holiday even more so, our special activity weeks introduce you to a range of winter pastimes. The programme is entirely flexible, allowing you to select four of the following: a half-day cross-country skiing lesson, a half-day downhill skiing lesson, a horse-drawn sleigh ride, a guided snow-shoe excursion, a curling lesson, ice-skating at the indoor ice rink, or an accompanied afternoon of tobogganing. For even greater value, we include equipment hire and all drinks during your stay.

Switzerland, Blitzingen

For a real winter escape, Blitzingen and the Hotel Castle are ideal. Here, in the tranquillity of the Goms Valley, you can enjoy the snow in a variety of ways, the highlights of the week being the two excursions led by your charming host, Peter Gschwendtner. A keen mountaineer who climbed Everest in 2004, he will show you the best of the valley on a half-day walk and a snow-shoe excursion. Snow-shoe rental is included for that day, as is cross-country ski hire on two other days so that you can explore the valley on skis – or take a lesson or two if you are new to the sport (pay locally). The remaining two days are left free, a chance to enjoy more of your favourite activity.

Austria, Pertisau

Pertisau has something on offer for everyone. You stay at the highly regarded Hotel Wiesenhof, where your hosts will ensure you have an action-packed week. Included in your stay are two two-hour workshops (including equipment) of the activity of your choice - choose from downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding or even have a go at the exhilarating sport of snow-biking! For something slightly more sedate, we also include a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snowy wilderness, organised by the hoteliers who are very keen riders and even have their own horses. After your day’s exertions, retire to the hotel’s excellent spa to relax and then sample the wonderful cuisine on offer in the hotel’s restaurant, all to help you recover fully for tomorrow’s activity!
