Favoured by the Swiss themselves for downhill skiing, Engelberg boasts excellent alpine pistes (and good cross-country skiing too), but what really makes the place is its refreshingly laid-back atmosphere. Fittingly, the 3-star Edelweiss is every bit as relaxed as the village. Indeed, this is one of the friendliest hotels in our selection, where English-speaking owners Peter and Susanne Kuhn extend a genuine welcome to you and cater very well for families with children of all ages.

Rooms: Bedrooms are equipped with twin beds, a bath or a shower, telephone, radio, hairdryer and cable television. We include the south or east-facing rooms with a balcony, which can accommodate one extra bed. If you require more space, you can upgrade to a superior room, in which two extra beds can be added, or a family apartment, which sleeps up to five and consists of two bedrooms (one usually with bunk beds), one bathroom and a balcony.

Facilities: Besides spacious lounges and a bar, the hotel offers a sauna, a solarium, an outdoor hot tub with wonderful mountain views, and excellent children’s facilities. These include a free kindergarten for over threes between 5pm and 9pm from Sunday to Friday, play areas, Nintendo games consoles, table tennis, table football and billiards.

Restaurant: The high-ceilinged restaurant is the room which best exemplifies the hotel’s Art Nouveau architecture (the hotel was built in 1901). Its huge windows afford breathtaking views of the dramatic high mountains framing the village, which you can admire as you dine. A special buffet dinner is held every week, and there are regular fondue evenings and candlelit dinners. Children can dine at a special sitting at 6.30pm, with dessert served by means of the model train that runs around part of the dining room!

Skiing and other winter activities: Engelberg is very much the quiet side of downhill skiing, and has the added bonus of some enjoyable cross-country trails too. In total, there are 82 kilometres of alpine pistes divided between two main areas which are on either side of the valley.
Both areas and their lifts are served by the free ski bus which departs from a stop a couple of minutes’ walk from the hotel. This is complemented by the hotel’s own shuttle bus service to the Titlis cable-car station every morning between 9am and 10am. In addition to several good beginners’ areas, there is extensive skiing for intermediate and advanced skiers, including a thrilling 12-kilometre piste on the slopes of Titlis, the mountain that dominates the village.
The 40 kilometres of cross-country skiing are best suited to beginners and intermediates, and include some superb high-altitude trails accessed by the Titlis cable car.
For something different, you can explore the 49 kilometres of winter walking paths, go ice-skating at the village rink, try out the toboggan run or go snow-shoeing. Your hosts arrange a complimentary horse-drawn sleigh ride for all stays over the festive period and throughout February, and organise an unrivalled weekly activity programme throughout the winter season that includes guided walks (some of them by torchlight after nightfall), as well as powder skiing and carving sessions.

The village: From the hotel it is just a couple of minutes’ walk to the pleasantly bustling village centre and its shops, cafés, bars and other facilities. The cable car to the top of Mount Titlis was the world’s first revolving cable car, and an excursion in it is rewarded by magnificent views. Another worthwhile excursion is the beautiful medieval city of Lucerne, an hour away by train.

Christmas festivities: Enjoy a varied week made all the more special with traditional celebrations, a full programme of events, gala dinners, a horse-drawn sleigh ride and a torchlit walk.

New Year celebrations: Celebrate New Year with a themed seven-course dinner party and children's entertainment.
